Caring for Kids' Teeth

Helping children build strong dental habits early on lays the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Dental care should begin even before the first tooth appears.

For infants, gently wipe gums with a soft, damp cloth. Once the first teeth erupt, use a small toothbrush with water or a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste.

Supervise brushing until children can do it effectively on their own, usually around age 6–7. Encourage brushing twice a day and flossing once daily once multiple teeth touch.

Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially sticky candies and juices. Offer tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, fruits, and crunchy vegetables instead.

Make dental visits positive and regular. Starting routine check-ups by age one helps children feel comfortable with the dentist and ensures early detection of any concerns.
